In the Bible we read that Yahweh (Jehovah) promised the land of Canaan to the Israelites – they had escaped from bondage in Egypt but had no place of abode, they had been wandering in the desert. The tumultuous events of 1947/48 were not the first time that an indigenous population living in Palestine was expelled by Jewish insurrectionists. And stayed wiped until 1948.ĭuring that long period, a phrase was invented by Christians and later taken up by Jews :Ī land without people for a people without land. There one minute, gone the next.īut in around 140 BC Israel came back again and lasted under the Greeks, Macedonians, Persians and Romans as a little bitty client state until they got on the nerves of another potentate who thought Israel should be wiped off the map, and it was so wiped in 70 AD by the Roman Emperor Vespasian. The dramatically-named Tiglath-Pileser III, King of the Assyrians, decided to do just that and then went right on ahead and did it in 750 BC – zap, no more Israel. But the Ayatollah wasn’t the first either, not by a long way. When Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in 2005 called for Israel to be wiped off the map, it wasn’t an original thought, he was quoting Ayatollah Khomeini. It’s a meditation and an anguished mulling on all things Israel.
This is a really good little memoir of a trip to Israel by a what you might call “conflicted” 26 year old American Jewish woman of the liberal-left persuasion.
